Mothers Day.jpg

This mothers day, we interviewed our own Mothers and asked them 5 questions about defining moments in their motherhood journey. We asked what they now know that they wish they knew then and which one of their children they love the best!
I think this was the most enjoyable, insightful interviews of our careers. They definitely filled us right up with love and gratitude for these women.

How did becoming a mother change you?
I was a responsible 21 year old when I gave birth to my first child. Over the last 42 years, living out my motherhood against a backdrop of immense social change has presented me with a range of diverse, exhilarating and challenging experiences which have helped me to evolve into a wiser, more tolerant and more compassionate person than I might otherwise have been.

Do you think it’s easier or harder to be a mother now than when you were raising our family?
I think it’s harder now for parents to achieve work/ life balance. Technology has impacted the work space to such an extent that the boundaries between work and personal life are constantly blurred. Hence, parents need to invest into sustainable self- care strategies to maintain their own wellbeing and that of their children. Also, teaching children/ teens about the responsible use of technology/ the internet & protecting them from the ever- present danger of cyber bullying is a monumental task for today’s parents!

What’s the one thing you would have done differently as a mom?
I was a stay at home mother for 13 years. I might have gone back to regular part-time work 1 or 2 days a week a little earlier for my own personal development.

Which one of your children do you like the best?
My 4 children were raised to value their own unique identity. I love and celebrate each one of them, their unique personality, set of skills and the unique contribution they make to the world around them.

What advice would you give to Mothers today?
When you wake up each day, be the best that you can be. Be open to what you can learn from others and keep growing!

How did becoming a mother change you?
I think of 2 things immediately -
1) It made me understand almost immediately much more about my own mother and mothers in general. The deepest love from the depths of you, where you literally would walk through fire or give your life for your child. It’s something that one doesn’t totally get until you have your own child. This incredible “mama bear” instinct surfaces forever.
2) It made me so aware of the awesome responsibility to be the best mom I know how to be and to be a good example of just being a good human and citizen of this planet even though I’m sure at times I could have done better!

Do you think it’s easier or harder to be a mother now than when you were raising our family?
I think it is relevant at the time no matter when you raise your child. All generations have faced both the same challenges and some different  due to a lot of factors. I will say that your generation now has many amazing things to help from baby equipment we never had to the internet with endless sources of information on any possible child rearing issues! On the other hand, life is ridiculously busy and I think the moms of today have more pressure on them to be the “perfect” mom and to enrol kids in endless activities etc. as well as working! Overall I think the moms I’m aware of now are amazing and are better moms than my group overall.

What’s the one thing you would have done differently as a mom?
The one thing I’d have done differently as a Mom is spend more time just having fun rather than worrying about chores or my house.

Which one of your children do you like the best?
Which child do I like the best ?!?  That’s the amazing thing about being a mom is that you love all your children exactly equal 100%.

What advice would you give to Mothers today?
