Should You Hire a Job Hopper? Here’s What You Need To Know

Gen-Z and TikTok have enlightened us to many emerging “trends” in the workspace over the past few years, from finding talent on social media platforms to Quiet Quitting. But, there’s a new cool kid on the block, and it’s something that, among the older generations, is thought to be quite taboo – Job Hopping.

What is it exactly? Job hopping entails employees finding new job placements and positions on a regular basis – this can range anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. The goal job hoppers have in mind is typically a promotion, title change, pay rise, or they could be making a big career shift.

When a job hopper applies for a role, it can be alarming at first to see the amount of jobs they’ve held in the past five years – we’re here to tell you that interviewing them (and potentially offering them the job) may not be the worst idea! Here are our top 4 reasons why you might consider extending an offer to the next job hopper that comes your way.

Job Hoppers are Resilient and Adaptable

One of our favourite frameworks we use to assess candidates is the GRIT framework. The first two attributes that candidates who demonstrate GRIT are the ability to be resilient and adaptable. These are defined as…

Resilience: The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. In other words, the ability to bounce back after adversity or disappointment.

Adaptability: The ability to change or be changed in order to fit or work better in certain situations.

These are two key attributes that job hoppers have picked up on their journey from company to company. They’re comfortable being place into new situations, offices, or challenges, and are used to consistent change – something that happens often in the current market.

Job Hoppers Possess the Propensity to Learn Quickly

Candidates who have the tendency to job hop love a new challenge and learning new things. They know how to pick things up quickly, whether it be company processes, softwares, products and more. By job hopping, these candidates have thrown themselves into new challenges and, like we said above, know how to adapt and learn things on the fly.

Job Hoppers Have Built Their Networks

Meeting new people and building a network is one of the many benefits job hoppers come with. Not only does a large network help them find new opportunities, but it can also be good news for your company (especially in B2B spaces). Our networks are a place to bounce ideas around, find support, or can mean the next dream client or partner for your business.

Job Hoppers Can be Great People Leaders

Job hoppers have worked for a lot of different leaders who likely practiced different leadership and management styles. They’ve had to adapt (our favourite buzzword here) and have spent time figuring out how effective leaders operate. They can take this knowledge on board as a leader themselves. Not only do they know how effective leaders operate, but they’ve also had to work with many different personality types, giving them a unique edge when it comes to conflict resolution and leading efficient and effective teams.

The above benefits of hiring a job hopper are not an extensive list, but our goal is to have you keep an open mind the next time a job hopper’s CV comes across your desk.
